The former Access and Environment Department became The Waterways andEnvironment in July 2011 because of the changing nature of the rolesand responsibilities it has. Waterways and Environment’ betterdescribes the wide range of activities that the team engages with, extending into regulation, legislation, liaison with agencies, navigation authorities and other organisations; plus the growing area ofenvironmental management.
Access to and along water remains a challenging issue with the teamproviding support and advice to colleagues in other departments, membersand other organisations, assisted by the Waterway Advisors. Existingaccess arrangements have been maintained and efforts to gain access andresolve difficulties have included both inland and coastal waters.
We work with our Regional and Local Waterways Advisors who have anessential role in providing local knowledge on canoeing activity to bothfull time CE staff and CE members.
What do we get involved in? There are a multitude of things relatedto the waterways both inland and coastal which we are required to beinvolved in to both support the access issue and to developrelationships with external organisations with whom we wish to promoteand develop canoeing in England.
We encourage paddlers to enjoy water responsibly in ways that arecompatible with the conservation of the environment and wildlife.
