OCTOBER 2013
THE CANOE ENGLAND VOLUNTEER & RECOGNITION AWARDS 2013
The Canoe England Volunteer and Recognition Awards 2013 took place at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham on the 12th October. Over 150 volunteers from across the country attended the event and celebrated their achievements together.
There was an extra buzz surrounding the event when the 150 guests were treated to a special surprise when Olympic heroes Etienne Stott, Tim Baillie and Ed Mckeever were in attendance. The three Olympic medalists were also joined by 11 additional athletes from Paracanoe, Slalom, Sprint, Freestyle, Canoe Polo and Wildwater Canoeing, who made the evening even more special.
Throughout the meal there was plenty of time for the volunteers to discover what was happening in clubs and to share examples of the many wonderful projects and initiatives that are happening across the country, enabling canoeing and kayaking to be the number one water sport in the country, something which we would not be able to say if it wasn’t for our volunteers.
Special guest Mark Shardlow from BBC East Midlands kicked the awards off and did a wonderful job of interviewing the numerous guest presenters and award winners throughout the evening. When all the plates had been scraped clean and the coffee finished it was time for the much anticipated awards to start.
We would like to say a big thank you to all those who made it happen and to all those in attendance.

Recent findings challenge the idea that Child Protection procedures create barriers and threats to volunteers. The research, conducted by sportscotland, found that volunteers supported the need for CRB disclosures and Child Protection. 75% of volunteers stated that disclosures give confidence that clubs provide a safe environment. Findings suggested that volunteers found a lack of time as a more significant barrier to volunteering.
