Coach and Volunteers Education

The British Canoe Union offers a range of products to develop and educate coaches and volunteers wishing to widen their knowledge for working with disabled paddlers. 

Foundation Paddle-Ability Module

This three hour course is a classroom based introduction to disability awareness in a Paddlesport setting.  It is aimed at Coaches and Volunteers who are new to working with disabled paddlers.  This module will educate attendees on a range of subjects and offer an opportunity for discussion on the thoughts and experiences with other delegates.

Intermediate Paddle-Ability Module

This is a full day classroom and practical course that develops the ideas from the Foundation Module.  It is aimed at coaches wishing to develop their knowledge of adaptive equipment and coaching principles.  This Module will include opportunities for delegates to consider and discuss different communication and coaching techniques that can be used when working with people with a range of disabilities, an opportunity to try out some of the adaptive equipment available and learn about the considerations that may need to be applied when planning a programme of activity for disabled paddlers.

Becoming a Tutor for Paddle-Ability Modules

Canoe England are always looking for new Tutors to deliver both the Foundation and Intermediate Paddle-Ability Modules.  Potential Tutors should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Evidence of degree level knowledge, or equivalent, in physical education, a subject related to special education needs and/or disability.  
  • Extensive experience of working with disabled participants in a paddlesport setting and will have an understanding of the varying needs of paddlers with a range of intellectual, sensory and physical impairments.  
  • A wide knowledge of the current equipment available for disabled paddlers and how a range of other pieces of equipment can be adapted to suit the needs of different individuals.
  • Should have attended the Module which they would like to Tutor
  • That their Coach Update Status is valid

To apply to be a tutor for the Foundation Module potential candidates need to complete the Foundation Tutor Application Form, to apply to become a tutor for the Intermediate Paddle-Ability Module candidates should submit a CV and covering letter.
