British Canoeing has been working with Keep Britain Tidy’s WatersideCare team, along with our partners at Canal & River Trust to look for ways we can help paddlers contribute to efforts to protect our waterways.
With the vital support of both Birmingham Canoe Club and Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club in Nottingham, we are delighted to announce two upcoming canal and river clean ups.
On Friday and Saturday Birmingham Canoe Club will be helping us run a clean-up event on the Ridgeacre Canal in Birmingham. The canal is now isolated from the main network, and provides an important green space in an urban environment for walkers, anglers – and paddlers! Unfortunately the area suffers from litter, collecting from various sources around the canal. This means the club can have a real impact in helping make the canal a more attractive environment for all water users.
It’s a short lead in time for this event, but if you are around and would like to join the clean-up, it will take place at:
The Ridgeacre Canal – meet at the Ridgeacre pub, B70 0NP
Meeting time – 10am on both Friday 20th and Saturday 21st March 2015-03-16
Approximate end time – around 2pm each day
If you would like to join the event, please contact us before Thursday 19th via [email protected]
If you can’t attend the event, but would like to get involved in canoeing or kayaking in the area, please contact Birmingham Canoe Club. They’ll help you get started in the sport, and develop your paddling skills.
The Nottingham clean-up will see members of Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club clearing the banks of the river Trent around the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. The river hear collects rubbish which has drifted downstream of the city, so the club will make a real impact in improving the area for the many paddlers who use the river, as well as other users, from anglers to walkers and cyclists.
The clean-up will take place after the club’s regular Saturday session, starting at 12pm on Saturday April 11th. For more details please contact us via [email protected].
If you live in the Nottingham area and would like to start paddling, have a look at Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club’s website. The club are involved in a wide variety of disciplines, so are sure to be able to help you get out on the water.
