Tees White Water Course Upgrade
The current British Waterways owned Tees white water rafting course is currently undergoing a massive improvement scheme. Based next to the Tees Barrage on the River Tees in Stockton-On-Tees, the project is being funded by One NE Regional Development Agency, Stockton Borough Council, Sport England and British Waterways to the value of 4.6M. The completed course will be managed by Tees Active Ltd.
Mostly funded by 3rd parties, once completed British Waterways will benefit from reduced long-term maintenance costs and will see a re-vitalised attraction at this key visitor destination.
The plans will see improvements to the existing white water course and will ensure an international standard facility created at the Tees, attracting world class events and athletes from around the globe. In addition the new course will be a vital community resource for the local residents. On a wider scale, the project will act as a vital catalyst in regenerating the whole of the Tees Valley area.
The engineering improvements involve reconfiguring the main course, building a second shorter course and installing four massive 12 metre long by 3 metre diameter Archimedes Screws, to pump the water needed to create guaranteed conditions for canoeists, rafter and other white water sports and making it the only fully sustainable white water course in the UK.

Works have now commenced and are due to be completed by the end of September 2010.
